About Towing and Tow Trucks
Tow Trucks are vehicles that are specifically designed to transport vehicles that are unable to move on their own. There are many different types of tow trucks that operate using a variety of methods. All tow trucks have either a hydraulic or pneumatic lift, and can tow vehicles using a hook and chain, wheel lift, or flatbed. They work by picking up at least two wheels of the vehicle being towed. The hook and chain is the only type of tow truck that does not use hydraulic or pneumatic lift. The hook and chain tow truck works by attaching a hook (attached to a wire or chain on a winch)to a to the axle of the vehicle being towed. It then uses the wench to pull the front of the vehicle off of the ground and onto two rigid rubber slings. This method of towing is generally used by only older tow trucks. The most common types of tow truck used by towing companies today are the wheel lift or flatbed/rollback tow truck.
